Violence against women and girls (VAWG)

Given the apparent growth of misogyny, particularly among young men, how can support services help victims of VAWG to avoid re-victimisation and work in their communities to tackle misogyny?

Many of the existing programmes aimed at educating young people to look critically at and reject extreme misogynist ideas are not working. We will examine why this is the case, and how wider systems aiming to combat violence against women and girls can be supported to tackle this problem specifically.

Centering the experience of women and girls, we will look in the round at ways of empowering both boys and girls to seek positive and healthy relationships. We’ll ask questions including: Are girls being supported to report abuse and are they being taken seriously when they do? How do we create space in schools for respectful but robust debate as part of, rather than in tension with safeguarding? What is the right balance between seeing young men as victims of powerful societal voices (including online) vs perpetrators of violence, and the repercussions that entails?
